How to make Classic Béchamel Sauce
Takes 20 minutes | Serves 4 |
Béchamel sauce, also known as white sauce, is a classic French sauce made from a white roux (butter and flour) and milk. It's a versatile sauce used in dishes like lasagna, moussaka, or as a base for other sauces.
Ingredients
- 30 g unsalted butter
- 30 g all-purpose flour
- 500 ml milk
- some salt
- some white pepper
- some pinch nutmeg
Steps
- Melt the butter over medium heat in a medium saucepan, avoiding browning.
- Add the flour to the melted butter, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes to form a roux.
- Gently warm the milk in another pot or microwave, then slowly add it to the roux, whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
- Continue to whisk the mixture on medium heat until it becomes smooth and starts to thicken.
- Lower the heat and cook the sauce, stirring frequently, until it reaches a sauce-like consistency, about 10 minutes.
- Season the sauce with salt, white pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
