Tuna Melt Sandwich

A classic tuna melt sandwich made with a flavorful tuna salad, American cheese, and served with salt-and-vinegar potato chips.

Ingredients

  • 80 ml mayonnaise
  • 60 ml minced bread and butter pickles
  • 7.5 ml yellow mustard
  • 0.5 tsp
  • 0.5 tsp smoked paprika
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • 60 ml extra-virgin olive oil
  • 280 g yellowfin tuna packed in water, drained and squeezed dry
  • 80 ml minced red onion
  • 80 ml minced celery
  • 0.5 tsp Tabasco sauce
  • some to taste Salt
  • 90 g unsalted butter
  • 8 slices rye bread (or other sandwich bread)
  • some to serve salt-and-vinegar potato chips
  • 6 slices American cheese

Steps

    Prepare the Tuna Salad

    • In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, minced pickles, mustard, vinegar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well.
    • Gradually stir in the olive oil until the mixture is well combined.
    • Add the drained tuna, minced red onion, and minced celery to the mixture. Stir until everything is evenly distributed.
    • Season with Tabasco sauce and salt to taste. Set aside.

    Assemble the Sandwiches

    • Spread the softened butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
    • Place four slices of bread, buttered side down, on a work surface. Top each with a slice of American cheese.
    • Evenly distribute the tuna salad over the cheese slices.
    • Top with another slice of cheese, then the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.

    Cook the Sandwiches

    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
    • Place the sandwiches on the skillet and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
    • Serve hot, with salt-and-vinegar potato chips on the side or in the sandwich for added crunch, if desired.
